September 7                            First Sunday Breakfast

                                               Children’s Move up Day

                                               Back pack blessing Day

 September 14                         KBF resumes

On September 7th, we would like to bless the children and their back packs, the shepherds and workshop leaders, and our KBF.  Please plan to come to the breakfast, and then help your children remember to go to the teachers lounge, so that they can meet their shepherd, talk about our rules, our plans and re-connect after the summer.  They will come up to the front, in their groups, with their shepherd, and be introduced and blessed.  They will then go to the back to stand behind the acolytes and process to the front for the hymns and songs, after which they will return to their seats for the service. Please help us by reminding them to dress nicely, and to consider what a blessing can do for them, during their new school year.

Our Kings Kids Team met recently to prepare for the new year.  Our curriculum is in place and many plans are being implemented.  Our commitment to our kings kids continues.

Help ... Help ... Help ... Help ... Help

We need a few more workshop leaders, and a male and a female to be consistent helper to WR’s Kids Worship.  He is looking for a commitment of 6 sessions, or 2 months.

The younger group is also in need of a leader for a 6 week rotation.  We provide the curriculum, the kids provide the energy, and God provides the Holy Spirit.

For more information, look on the Kings Kids table for a description of what we are in need of, or contact Elna.

NURSERY NEWS

We are very excited that Kristin Kroll has accepted the child care position in our nursery.  She brings her own educational toys and great ideas as she has worked as a kindergarten teacher in Northern Virginia, and is currently a graduate student at JMU.  Please welcome her warmly as she helps us improve our wonderful nursery with every passing week.

See the picture below and you will see that Christ the King loves children, especially the unborn, most vulnerable ones!  We support the great work of the Harrisonburg Pregnancy Center, as they help young women make the right decision regarding their unborn babies.

We at Christ the King are in love with our little ones.  Come and find out why, if you don’t already know.

During the regular school year the nursery is available at 9:15 for 0-4 year olds.  Our hours are shorter in the summer, as KBF and ABF are on hiatus. Our nursery is staffed by loving consistent child care workers, as well as members of our congregation.  There is a time for age appropriate structured learning, singing, free play, and snacking. Yes, very young kids in the nursery are quite capable of learning about Jesus too!   J

Please note:  The older nursery (pre-K) kids are invited to join the Kids Worship with kindergarteners and 1st graders which takes place during the sermon.  We will happily do this, but only at the request of the parents. They may go back to the nursery, or join their families for communion when it is over.

A kid’s keeper list is available on the nursery sign in table.  Check it out, and if you need to make changes to it, contact Elna 434-4168.  These names will appear on the tool soon.  If you would like to be a Kids Keeper, please let Elna know so we can add your name to the list, or sub list.    J

Here is our weekly devotional for you and your child or children to read together.  We hope that you do in fact read these and talk about the message…

Title: Don't Get Even -- Get Ahead

Theme: Forgiving others when they hurt you. Proper 18 (23)

Object: A simple balance scale and some stones of different sizes. (See link following the sermon)

Scripture: If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him -- work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend. Matthew 18:15 (The Message)

Look what I have. Do you know what this is? It is a balance scale. It is used to compare things to see which is heavier. If you can get items that weigh exactly the same, the two sides of the scale will be even. Let me show you. (Put a stone in one of the cups and then the other using stones of different sizes.) Are the cups even? No, let's try putting another stone in this cup. Are they even now? No, now this side is too heavy. (Continue for a few minutes making sure that the two sides are never even.) It is really hard to get the two sides even, isn't it?

Has anyone ever said something that hurt your feelings? Sure they have! Perhaps you were playing with a friend and he called you a name. What did that make you want to do? Did it make you want to want to get even by calling your friend a name? Do you know what? That is just like trying to balance these scales -- you never get even! He calls you a name and so you call him a name. He doesn't like that so he calls you another name and on and on the name-calling goes. You never get even!

I have heard people say, "Don't get mad; get even." Think about the balance scale. We saw how hard it is to get even, so here's a better idea, "Don't get even; get ahead." How do you do that? Well, let me explain. In our Bible reading today, Jesus says, "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him -- work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend." Now that's what I call "getting ahead." If we try to get even, we will lose a friend, but if we forgive someone, we will make a friend!

Jesus did not call us to be his disciples to make other people pay for their sins by hurting them back. Instead, he told us to do what he did -- love them and forgive them. Sometimes that is very hard to do, but we can do it if we ask Jesus to help us.

Dear Jesus, when someone hurts us, help us to talk to them and try to fix things up rather than to hurt them back. Help us to love and forgive others as you have loved and forgiven us. Amen.
